Our programs span Wisconsin, the upper midwest, and central Oregon. Wilderness therapy occurs in our primary field operations area located in the Chequamegon National Forest, WI and in the Willamette Valley, as well as Deschutes National Forest OR and the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. . NVW operates under a Special Use Permit with the Williamette and Deschutes National Forest.
No. Backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, rain ponchos, water bottles, cook sets, and stoves are all provided. Additionally, all Outdoor Clothing is provided in your program fee. See forms page for “What to Bring”.
We pride ourselves in having a small student to staff ratio. Typical group size is 8 students to 3 staff. However, smaller groups are run too, with no minimum group size. This allows for more 1:1 opportunities.
Students are provided their own tent as part of our Trauma-Informed Model.
No. Our trips are run in only single gender groups. This allows participants to open up more in groups with less concern about impressing others or other worries that can impede the therapeutic process.
In the West Coast (Central Oregon) program, young adult (18+) populations may be co-ed.
Yes, students learn how to cook meals along with other valuable life skills. Typical meals include pancakes, oatmeal, bagel sandwiches, spaghetti, burritos, etc.
Our programs are designed to meet individual needs. We can accommodate some physical disabilities. However, our programs are strenuous and require a certain amount of fitness and ability. All clients are required to visit a physician prior to their expedition as part of the enrollment process. NVW will coordinate with a physician and parent to determine if we can manage certain physical limitations/restrictions.
Field Instructors are trained in medication administration, and all meds are held by Field Instructors. Medication checks are also available by psychiatrists.

Our staff must pass a background check and thorough screening process. Our field staff posses college degrees and/or have the expertise and qualifications to work in our relational, therapeutic environment. Each group has access to a certified Wilderness First Responder trained in CPR. NVW’s field team has access to medical professionals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. See our staff pages to learn more.
Yes. We carry full liability insurance.
Cognitive-behavioral, motivational enhancement, Dyadic Developmental Therapy, Emotional Focused Therapy, experiential, healing through metaphors, and Brainspotting as well as other experiential therapies.
Yes. We offer a limited amount of scholarships annually. Please inquire with admissions.
Quest clients are automatically enrolled in The NVW Academy, in Wisconsin, a DPI registered private school. NVW may coordinate work in the field with schools during the school year.
No. However participants commonly return from our trips with a greater understanding of themselves spiritually.
